Reading Expectations and how to support your child...
In 6th/7th grade we are:
- "Reading closely and citing several sources of evidence from grade-level fiction and nonfiction works to support an analysis of what the material says.
- Developing a rich vocabulary of complex and sophisticated words and using them to speak and write more precisely and coherently."
- I would encourage your child to read daily for at least 30 minutes but try to increase it to an hour per day when possible. Students should talk about and/or write about what they are reading to help with comprehension. (This is why we do a weekly reading log:).
- Students should also read grade level text as much as possible. Below is a link to help with some ideas on what would be a grade level text. Students should read both informational text and literature. Do not feel pressure to buy books. I would check the books out of the library until your child finds a favorite author or genre. http://www.booksource.com/Departments/Booksource/Grades-3-6/Common-Core/Grade-6.aspx?CategoryBvin=ce408d3d-9228-457c-9ea2-7c87a6d958e8&SubCategoryBvin=5057b7dd-b270-4368-9f14-208e3a44492c
